Review & Interview 2002 Salem - "Collective Demise" Israel - 2002 - System Shock - 48' 24 CD REVIEW The international metal landscape would not be complete if one omitted to speak about this legendary group which is SALEM. They come us straight of Israel, country rather not very famous for its groups and even less for its groups of qualities (quote the mythical ORPHANED LAND all the same, more known group in our regions), and shows us, since nearly two decades, that the local scene is more than alive, and than one can, without sorrow, to count on it. Small retrospective of the career of the group: SALEM is formed in 1985, and carries out two demos ("Salem" in 1986 and "Destruction Till Death" into 1987). The group carries out a live third demo ("Million Slaughtered Live" into 1990) and sells some nearly 1500. It is thanks to the latter that the German label Morbid Records is interested in them. From this signature will be born two albums ("Creating Our Sins" in 1992 and "Kaddish" into 1994), and the name of the group will start to turn on whole planet (more than 40 000 copies of sold). The video clip "The Fading", the first piece of "Kaddish" will be diffused on MTV (in "Headbangers Ball", the mythical emission with not less mythical Vanessa Warwick with the orders) and will make it possible the group to be made elect as being one of the ten best formations Metal in the world by MTV and Kerrang. The group leaves a third album ("A Moment Of Silence") in 1998 and signs in December 2001 with the German firm System Shock a contract for three albums which it starts to honour with this present "Collective Demise". Musicalement, the group proposes to us a subtle mixture between of Black, Death and Thrash, as if NECROPHOBIC had copulated with KREATOR and had given birth to this ch?rubin. You will say to me that there is nothing exceptional with that but SALEM has a kind of gift to make its music very effective, accrocheuse and interesting. The true originality of the group is the use of female song and traditional instruments which gives a very Eastern side to the thing (it is true that in the above mentioned styles, it is quasi new). The very clean production allows us us d?lecter true potential of the group and to see that, as opposed to what many people could think, in Israel, there are good means placed at the disposal, proof is this "Collective Demise". The powerful song of Ze-ev is at the border of the three caused styles and contrasts very well with that of Kristin on the four pieces where it intervenes. The work of the guitars was consequent to update a real harmonization between them whereas the rhythm section hammers us the whole to give a true effect "blow of fist" to the album. Like known as higher, one distinguishes a notable use of traditional instruments, like Arabic darbouka ("Broken Yet United") and percussions afro-cuban ("Dead Eyes" & "Slavic"). The compos are, of a general nature rather mid-tempo but certain variations, to note, are present to hold us in breath until the last minute and I can say to you that one is not bored a moment. Side concept, the group explores and describes moments of our reality since September 2001, that in known as length... SALEM is able at point to name with this album and this signature to remake to speak about him, let us hope that System Shock will be with the height of their hopes, they deserve it... since time. Vous me direz qu'il n'y a rien d'exceptionnel ? ?a mais SALEM a une sorte de don pour rendre sa musique tr?s efficace, accrocheuse et int?ressante. La v?ritable originalit? du groupe est l'emploi de chant f?minin et d'instruments traditionnels qui donne un c?t? tr?s oriental ? la chose (il est vrai que dans les styles pr?cit?s, c'est quasi in?dit). La production tr?s propre nous permet de nous d?lecter du v?ritable potentiel du groupe et de voir que, contrairement ? ce que beaucoup de gens pourraient penser, en Isra?l, il y a de bons moyens mis ? disposition, preuve en est ce "Collective Demise". Le chant puissant de Ze-ev se situe ? la fronti?re des trois styles suscit?s et contraste tr?s bien avec celui de Kristin sur les quatre morceaux o? elle intervient. Le travail des guitares a ?t? cons?quent pour mettre ? jour une r?elle harmonisation entre elles alors que la section rythmique nous mart?le le tout pour donner une v?ritable effet "coup de poing" ? l'album. Comme dit plus haut, on distingue une utilisation notable d'instruments traditionnels, comme du darbouka arabique ("Broken Yet United") et des percussions afro-cubaine ("Dead Eyes" & "Slave"). Les compos sont, d'ordre g?n?ral plut?t mid-tempo mais certaines variations, ? noter, sont pr?sentes pour nous tenir en haleine jusqu'? la derni?re minute et je peux vous dire qu'on ne s'ennuie pas un instant. C?t? concept, le groupe explore et d?crit des instants de notre r?alit? depuis septembre 2001, ?a en dit long… SALEM arrive ? point nommer avec cet album et cette signature pour refaire parler de lui, esp?rons que System Shock sera ? la hauteur de leurs esp?rances, ils le m?ritent… depuis le temps.
